Connecting to the Dreamworld grid ...

Establishing a connection to the virtual grid is easy to do by using the Dreamworld viewer, in a few minutes from now you will be able to log on to the Dreamworld grid and start exploring the virtual world. You can choose between different viewers or clients for this purpose. You might also test out the different viewers that are available since each viewer offers certain extras over the other one. There is a detailed tutorial on how you can connect to the grid with your avatar which will assist you to enter the grid. Keep in mind that it is essential to first create your avatarin order to get grid access. Once you have installed the Dreamworld viewer and created your avatar you are ready to enter the virtual world.

Once you are connected

Congratulations, you are now logged on to the grid and have entered the virtual world. You can commence exploring the world, edit your appearance and be amazed about what you will see. Talk to the other people, discover what Dreamworld is about. Make yourself accustom with the viewer and controls. You will see several places in world that will help and assist you to get on your virtual feet.

Customizing your avatar

Default avatar appearance on the Dreamworld grid.
Once you enter Dreamworld you will be presented with the default avatar appearance. Your avatar (your physical body in the virtual world) will look similar as the one pictured on the left. You can change your avatar in every possible way, it might seem a bit complicated at first but once you understand how it works you will be able to change every single feature: your shape; hair; eyes; up to the bone structure of your face. There is no limitation in what your appearance can look like. To help you get started you can find complete tutorials and documentation on the avatar portal.

Beyond the basic shape

Once you have learned how you can alter your appearance, change the color of your hair you might want to go a step further. You can make your own clothes for example and wear them or use a different skin or get yourself jewelry, better looking hair or some cool shades. Once you've come this far you will be pleased with your appearance, how you look. Now it's time to explore the world.

Building in Dreamworld

It all starts with a prim

One of the many things you can do in Dreamworld is building. What can you build? Use your imagination, you can build anything you want, neither do you have to be a professional 3D content creator to get started. We have created a fine selection of building tutorials to help you get on your way. Everybody starts with a prim (see image). Prims (short for primitives) will be your basic building blocks when you commence your adventure as an architect, artist, sculptor. Once you get more skilled and become a more advanced builder you will probably want to take a look at sculpties or sculpted prims so you can create more advanced shapes which use more vertices which in their turn output a higher LOD (level of detail) for your builds. What is also very interesting in Dreamworld is that you can make use of several viewers. You aren't stuck with just one single viewer that you have to stick by to create all your content. Do take a look at the viewers to inform yourself about what kind of advantages each viewer has to offer that will provide you the tools you need to give birth to your next masterpiece.

The future of building - In progress...

At current date Dreamworld provides support for building with primitives, allows the import of sculpted prims aka sculpties. Dreamworld's vision is that a virtual world should have real 3D objects in it and not just building blocks, we are convinced that there is need for a platform which doesn't limit itself to prim builds. We believe that this is where the future of building for virtual worlds lays and this is also the direction we wish to follow and work towards to.

Scripting explained

Without scripted objects a virtual world would be a rather static looking enviroment. Scripts are what make things come alive and allow you to interact with the world. When you are in Dreamworld you will see many scripted items, from a glowing torch or a smoking chimney to a sophisticated vendor system or a car. All the items that you can interact with contain scripts. You don't need to be a programmer to make use of scripts, take a look at the Scripting Library where you can find all types of scripts to use for reference or to apply in your own builds. By using the extensive documented scripting portal you can learn more about the functions which are supported in Dreamworld and get started with coding. If you are new to scripting or wish to stay up to date you will find our scripting portal most appreciative.

LSL only a basic start in scripting

While LSL currently is the main supplier for all of Dreamworld's scripting functions it's also possible to script in a language that you are more familiar with like VB.net or #C and even JAVA.net. Take a look at the Scripting Languages to educate yourself more on this topic. As Dreamworld is currently in Alpha testing phase this also applies to scripting. Each day more functions become active and progress is made on this subject.

Dreamworld a place for business and economy

Untill today virtual worlds have shown they can be more than a place to have an alternative life. The so called "metaverse" also offers opportunity for businesses and individuals to participate in what is described as a virtual economy. In order to do so Dreamworld offers a full scale robust economy platform where goods and services can be traded for money. Dreamworld has it's own virtual world currency named the VEC which supplies the residents of Dreamworld with a stable virtual currency unit to trade inside of the 3D environment. In order to enable and stimulate real life business projects inside Dreamworld, the virtual currency can be exchanged again for real money. You can educate yourself about how the Dreamworld economy works by visiting the Economy Portal. Each resident can participate in the virtual economy in various ways just like one can in the real world. Dreamworld does provide everything that is needed in order to establish and run a fruitful business inside of the metaverse in a responsible way so avatars can trade in a healthy and stable economical environment.

Virtual land

One of the very basics of a virtual world is land or terrain, without it nothing could be created as there would be no space for houses to be build or businesses to settle. Just like in the real world the virtual world of Dreamworld consists out of a land mass and oceans, you could say that it mirrors planet earth in a certain way. Dreamworld has a beautiful landscape, ranging from lakes and rivers to mountains; deserts; forests; tropical islands and beyond.

Not the virtual world as you know it

There exist all possible models in virtual worlds these days to let users or "residents" own or use a part of the virtual world so they can interact with it in a more advanced way. Those models range from allowing inhabitants to rent a virtual space, either in the form of a hotel room; house; apartment to even an empty parcel of virtual land. By doing this the user gets more involved with the world as he or she settles down inside of that virtual enviroment. In a way somebody who does get involved in a virtual world is a virtual colonist since we are at the very beginning of the era of virtual worlds and still have to discover in a large way what virtual worlds can offer. The current models to get invested or settle down in a world are extremely primitive. In many cases being a part of the world means only to rent a room or empty parcel to deposit the virtual goods one acquired or created in the virtual world, something that can be compared with renting a storage container. Dreamworld is convinced that land and location are extremely important and when people do invest in the virtual world in the form of time, funds, services or goods something should account for or justify those investments. Either if the investment was purely for entertainment or for business use a solid value needs to be connected to the investment. Just like in the real world land or real estate hangs closely together with the economy, the same applies to the virtual world of Dreamworld.

Virtual Goods and Objects

Without objects in it the world would be empty. Content is extremely important in a virtual world or 3D enviroment. Content, either made out of prims or professional meshes shows you what the world is about. 3D objects are responsible for how the resident or avatar experiences and interacts with a certain place in world. Dreamworld places a high value on content either created by residents or professionals.

From primitive to 3D content

Most people begin with the creation of 3D objects by using primitives, a set of basic building blocks such as cubes, spheres and cylinders. It is possible to make just about anything out of primitives but they are not suitable to create more advanced objects such as you see in normal video games. At the moment people who wish to take building a step further are forced to use sculpted prims, also knows as sculpties. Sculpted prims allow the creation of smoother surfaces but do not resemble the quality that meshes produce, sculpted prims are basic primitives altered by the use of professional 3D software into something that is supposed to resemble mesh objects but do not have the same quality and detail.

People make the virtual world to what it is

Each resident who connects to the grid becomes a part of the world and influences the world in a large or small way by their behaviour. While for some people Dreamworld is a place to entertain themselves, makes new friends, party and have fun, for other people it's a place where they do business, trade goods, and are active in the world economy. In some cases their virtual commercial activities become their real life business. Just as in real life you can deceide what you become, the same goes for your virtual life.
